On Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 June, as part of the FirEUrisk Project, ISIG and the Bioeconomy Institute of the CNR of Sassari were engaged in Suni, Sardinia, in the initiative “Fire risk mitigation through prescribed fire prevention interventions and preventive forestry – The experience and forestry of Suni the participatory contribution of the stakeholders”.
The ten-year experience of reintroducing prescribed fire as a fire risk prevention tool was at the center of the debate over the two days, which saw broad participation by residents, the Barracellare Company, the Forestry Corps and the Environmental Supervision, the Forestas Agency, the Civil Protection and various local administrators of the territory.
As part of the initiative, ISIG offered the opportunity to create a network between the scientific world, citizens, emergency operators and public decision-makers, in order to promote further risk reduction strategies and actions, including communication to involve all the local community. The opportunities for inter-municipal cooperation within the Council of Europe Toolkit were also illustrated.
The positive feedback from the local community of Suni and the Planargia area is an excellent stimulus for planning further initiatives for the participatory construction of prevention, adaptation and mitigation strategies.
