CRESO addresses coastal zone management in the context of climate change by developing knowledge and tools to assess the risks and impacts associated with sea-level rise, storm surges, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
The project takes an integrated approach to the physical transformations of the coastline, the pressure exerted by economic, tourism, and social activities, and the resulting impacts on ecosystems and the socioeconomic fabric. The goal is to support more informed and resilient planning of coastal areas through collaboration among research organizations, public institutions, and local stakeholders in Italy and France.
Objectives and Activities
CRESO’s activities are organized into three main areas: the characterization of coastal hazards under various climate scenarios, the analysis of vulnerability and impacts on local areas, and the development of shared tools for risk planning and management.
Specifically, the project includes:
- the collection and processing of meteorological and oceanographic data and the development of scenarios for the time horizons of 2050 and 2100;
- the identification of areas potentially at risk of flooding, sea-level rise, and storm surges;
- an assessment of the environmental, social, and economic impacts in the affected areas;
- a comparison of different intervention strategies, including the option of taking no action;
- the development of shared guidelines and recommendations for coastal risk management and mitigation.
The methodologies and tools developed are applied and tested at pilot sites in Nice, Ajaccio, Cagliari, Genoa, and Livorno, which are representative of different environmental, territorial, and socioeconomic conditions.
The role of ISIG
As part of the mandate entrusted to it by the University of Genoa, ISIG oversees CRESO’s communication and outreach activities, helping to ensure that the project’s objectives, activities, and results are accessible and recognizable to institutions, local stakeholders, and the interested public.
The role involves designing and producing communication materials, managing social media channels, and supporting partners in planning and promoting events. Particular attention is paid to adapting scientific and technical content into forms that are understandable, consistent, and suitable for the various communication channels and target audiences.
These activities also support the partnership in organizing the final event and disseminating the results produced, ensuring overall coordination of communication and highlighting the cross-border nature of the knowledge and tools developed.
Results and Tools
CRESO plans to carry out the following:
- a public database containing meteorological and marine information and scenarios for areas potentially at risk of flooding;
- a dataset for assessing the social, economic, and environmental impacts associated with various climate scenarios;
- an interregional document containing guidelines and recommendations for managing future impacts and defining measures to mitigate coastal risks.
