Abstract: The work is a synthesis – reinterpreted through places name-giving – of the political, economic and social atmosphere in Gorizia between 1948 and 1990, extrapolated from the resolutions of the City Council and the acts of the Toponymy Commission.
The history remembered by the names to which city roads and places are dedicated to, is in fact intertwined with the events that these names evoke and with the feelings from which came the choices of the city officials.
Telling the dedications of the streets and at the same time revealing a glimpse of the social and political life of Gorizia from the immediate post-war period to the last years of the twentieth century, the work shows that place names can be an interesting and challenging key to know better one’s own city.
