Abstract: The volume summarizes the main findings of the LIGHT ON research activities, as coordinated by the project Scientific Board, composed by Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem (ELTE), Peace Institute (PI)   and the Institute of International Sociology of Gorizia (ISIG).
LIGHT ON research activities aim to investigate and analyze the contemporary expressions of racism and discrimination in European communities, focusing on people’s perception of symbols and words with typical or hidden racist contents. The ultimate goal is to provide scientific-based knowledge about the social disvalue of such manifestations and their dangerous negative influence on daily social life.
The LIGHT ON research findings are presented, according to an architecture structured in three main parts:
– desk research, depicting the social context in which racism is manifested;
– qualitative research, investigating expressions of and reactions to racism, highlighting the most common racist, xenophobic and extremist symbols and words, while explaining their traditional and current meanings;
– quantitative research,  investigating the main perceptions and interpretations of racist visual and verbal items among youth across Europe.
