Abstract: The first section discusses basic questions about the status and methods of the sociological approach to the environment, about languages and conceptual spaces needed for the analysis of ecological problems.
The second section shows how the classic theme of planning extends from the original interest in urban and rural problems to the protection and enhancement of natural resources, and in general to sustainability. The protected areas are, in this sense, as a privileged place for experimentation.
The third section turns to the participation, the central issue in the context of an ecological crisis which is also the crisis of institutions’ efficiency and legitimacy. In Italy established methodologies for the participatory management of environmental issues do not exist: the contributions here offer a number of ideas and inducements.
The fourth section deals with the perception and evaluation of natural and technological risks. The attention focuses on forms and modes of social construction of risk and on processes according to which a public decision on issues characterized by great uncertainty is achieved.
